This journal is concerned with original research, new developments, site measurements and case studies in rock mechanics and rock engineering. It provides an international forum for the publication of high quality papers on the subject of rock mechanics and the application of rock mechanics principles and techniques to mining and civil engineering projects built on or in rock masses, journal of rock mechanics and mining sciences. These projects include slopes, open-pit mines, quarries, shafts, tunnels, caverns, underground mines, metro systems, dams and hydro-electric stations, geothermal energy and radioactive waste disposal. Papers are welcomed on all relevant topics and especially on theoretical developments, analytical methods, numerical methods, rock testing, site investigation, design, back analysis, what mining companies case studies.   • Microstructure of Billings Shale and Biochemical Alteration Products, Ottawa, Canada

    A microstructural analysis has been made of altered and unaltered black shale from a site where foundation heave has occurred. Jarosite framboids composed of very small interlocking crystals, much larger crystals of gypsum and microorganisms are described in the altered shale. The relative roles of jarosite, gypsum, and other hydrated sulphates in the generation of heave forces is not fully understood. If jarosite is responsible, most black shales have a heave potential; if gypsum journal of rock mechanics and mining sciences responsible only black shales which contain carbonate need be of concern. Recognition of fungi and other microbes suggests a more complex biogeochemical cycle than previously supposed; the use of microorganisms as a method of controlling heave warrants more investigation.   • Landslide at Orleans, Ontario. 4R

    Studies of landslides in the Ottawa area have indicated that the clay involved in the failure was not an intact clay, but one containing a system of fissures. This paper deals with one of the cases studied, in which a 35-ft cut slope for a roadway failed five years after construction. Good agreement was achieved between the strength derived from the field study and the strength measured in the laboratory using the triaxial apparatus with low confining stresses.   • Analysis of ultimate loads of shallow foundations

    Ultimate loads of shallow foundations were analyzed. Rational compressibility criteria for soils subjected to foundation loads was formulated. It was shown that the greatest shortcoming of available theories lied in the unreserved assumption of soil incompressibility. The conventional, static analysis of bearing capacity can be used for footings subjected to moderately rapid loadings.

  • Draft ISRM suggested method for in situ stress measurement using the compact conical-ended borehole overcoring (CCBO) technique

    A Second Series of Suggested Methods is being produced by the ISRM Commission on Testing Journal of rock mechanics and mining sciences from 1998 onwards. In this Second Series, for each SM two versions are published: 1. A Draft SM written by the Working Group Co-ordinator(s); 2. A Final SM also produced by the Working Group Go-ordinator but with amendments resulting from the Draft SM review by ael service mining Working Group Members and other comments received after publication of the Draft SM. A suite of the new Suggested Methods is currently being published in this Journal. These journal of rock mechanics and mining sciences with an Indentation Hardness Index SM written by T, journal of rock mechanics and mining sciences. Szwedzicki and published in June 1998. Several more will be published in 1999. An earlier SM produced by Drs Kim and Franklin, "Suggested Methods for Rock Stress Determination" (1987, Vol. 24, journal of rock mechanics and mining sciences, No. 1, pp. 53-73), covered the flatjack, hydraulic fracturing, USBM and CSIRO overcoring stress measurement techniques. This stress measurement SM supplements the earlier one by journal of rock mechanics and mining sciences guidance on the use of a Japanese borehole overcoring technique in which only one drill size is required, journal of rock mechanics and mining sciences, i.e. by 'compact overcoring'.
